Accreditation

The Association of Jewish Libraries Synagogue, School and Center Division offers a certificate of accreditation to libraries that qualify. Accreditation is offered at the basic and advanced level. There is a supplementary application form for day school / media center libraries. Initial accreditation is good for three years, then upon renewal, another three years. If there is no lapse in renewals, a short update is all that is required to renew.

The Accreditation Committee is composed of librarians who are prepared to mentor and otherwise assist applicants in achieving accreditation.

In accordance with Association of Jewish Libraries professional objectives and standards, the following are the stated missions and goals of the AJL Library Accreditation Committee and its activities:

Mission

  • To design and set model standards for effective synagogue, school, and center libraries.
  • To advise libraries in their pursuit of and achievement of these model standards.
  • To create an accreditation certificate that serves as the standard measure by which effective synagogue, school or center library facilities and service may be judged.
  • To review, re-establish and recertify a library's progress and standing on a regular basis.
  • Goals

  • To establish and describe the hallmarks of an effective library program.
  • To publish these criteria to synagogues, schools and centers.
  • To publicize the availability of advisors and mentors from the Accreditation Committee and AJL at large to aid any library seeking to meet these certification criteria.
  • To make AJL's SSC Accreditation a necessary component of local educational agencies' overall accreditation process for synagogue and school educational programs.
  • Standards of Excellence
These AJL standards are measures of excellence for school, synagogue, and Jewish community center libraries. Please use the criteria as guidelines to measure and improve your library's operation.
