Director of the Leopold Muller Memorial Library and Curator of the Hebrew and Judaica Collections

OXFORD CENTRE FOR HEBREW AND JEWISH STUDIES and BODLEIAN LIBRARIES Grade 9: Salary £42,733 - £49,539 p.a.

The Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies and the Bodleian Libraries of the University of Oxford jointly appoint a person to the shared position of Director of the Leopold Muller Memorial Library and Curator of the Hebrew and Judaica Collections of the Bodleian Libraries. The Bodleian Libraries, whose Hebrew collections were founded in 1602, is the world’s richest treasury of manuscripts and books related to medieval European Jewish civilization and has very strong holdings in all aspects of Hebrew and Jewish studies. The Muller Library is an incomparable scholarly resource for understanding modern European Jewish civilization.

The Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies and the Bodleian Libraries seek a distinguished professional librarian and scholar to fill a position made vacant by retirement. The successful candidate may have been awarded an advanced degree or equivalent qualification in Hebrew or Jewish studies and professional qualification and senior experience in librarianship. He or she may have an excellent knowledge of classical and modern Hebrew and other classical and modern languages and professional expertise in some aspect of Hebrew book culture. He or she may have a record of extensive professional experience of working in a research library or archive including leadership, management, and staff supervision. He or she may be able to communicate effectively and have a strong customer service orientation with library staff, academic colleagues, library users, donors, and other constituencies within and without the institutions. He or she may be familiar with library information technologies and their applications in Hebrew and Jewish studies. He or she may be comfortable in participating in fundraising initiatives and in communicating to broad audiences through exhibitions, publications, and other outreach activities.

The appointment will be from 1 September 2011 or as soon as possible thereafter. The appointment will be made jointly by the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies and the Bodleian Libraries of the University of Oxford.
