Curator of the Dorot Jewish
Division, New York Public Library
Job Description:
Reporting to the Head of Collection Development, the Curator of the Dorot
Jewish Division is responsible for developing, explicating and managing the
Library's Judaica collection in collaboration with staff throughout the
Library.
- Builds on the Library's unique collection strengths in both
traditional and new media formats.
- Coordinates new acquisitions or gifts of special collection material
with the Rare Books Curator or staff in other collections.
- Works closely with others to manage the acquisitions budget.
- Participates in the ongoing evaluation and assessment of the
collection to identify core collection strengths and areas of overlap
with key academic library partners.
- Assists in developing collaborative and inter-institutional
collection development policies and new programmatic goals in the
framework of library-wide strategic planning.
- Builds strong and effective internal partnerships with staff in
Special Formats Processing, the Digital Imaging Unit and
Preservation, units which are located off-site.
- Collaborates with Dorot Division Reading Room public service staff to
provide reference and research services, especially individualized
consultations.
- Promotes and interprets the collection to various audiences within
and outside of the Library through classroom instruction, online
exhibitions, publications and the use of various online and social
media tools; helps foster interactive and creative use of digital
collection content.
- Participates in grant and external funding activities, including
managing specific grant-funded projects.
Identifies, evaluates and prioritizes materials for digitization
initiatives.
- Works cooperatively with internal departments to achieve processing
efficiencies.
- Identifies and prioritizes materials for preservation treatment,
especially at-risk materials.
Serves on relevant committees and task forces.
- Maintains a personal program of continuous education and professional
development and assists other staff members in developing such
programs for themselves.
- Represents the library in organizations, conferences and consortia.
- Keeps abreast of the trends in collection development, digital
publishing, and scholarly communication.
Performs related duties as required.
Job Requirements
- ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library and Information Studies and
additional graduate degree in a field related to Jewish studies; or a
Ph.D. and substantial research library experience.
- Five years of successful professional experience in collection
development in Jewish studies.
- Demonstrated knowledge of scholarly print and electronic resources in
Jewish Studies and the publishing and distribution of materials in
Israel, including knowledge of the antiquarian book market.
- Demonstrated knowledge of trends in collection development, digital
initiatives, and scholarly communication and publishing, with an
emphasis on trends in the humanities.
- Successfully demonstrated experience in the areas of project
management, problem-solving and decision-making in a collaborative
and coordinated strategic-planning environment.
- Successfully demonstrated experience managing materials budgets.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills,
including successfully demonstrated ability to work effectively with
the public, staff and donors.
- Experience with fundraising preferred.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Hebrew and at least one European
language, with knowledge of Yiddish preferred.

Upper School Head Librarian, Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, Rockville, Maryland
The Head Librarian is the chief information specialist of the Upper
School. S/he provides leadership and expertise in the selection,
acquisition, evaluation, and organization of information resources in
all formats (including both print and digital resources), and in the
ethical use of information. S/he serves as an instructional partner
to teachers in building and strengthening connections among student
research needs, curricular content, learning outcomes, and
information resources, and in ensuring that the library is an
integral part of the instructional program. S/he is responsible for
creating and maintaining a welcoming environment that is conducive to
student learning, and for promoting the library and the use of its
resources within the school community. S/he partners with other
faculty members to empower students to be critical thinkers,
enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, proficient users of a
variety of media, and ethical consumers of information.
Responsibilities:
- Developing and maintaining a collection of resources
appropriate to the curriculum, the learners, and the teaching styles
and instructional strategies used within the school
community. Maintaining the online catalog and supervising the
cataloguing of all new materials. Organizing the library resources
for maximally effective use and establishing processes and procedures
for selection, acquisition, circulation, and resource sharing that
ensure that all appropriate general and Judaic resources are
available when needed.
- Evaluating, promoting, and using existing and emerging
technologies to support teaching and learning, supplement school
resources, connect the school with the global learning community,
communicate with students and teachers, and provide constant access
to library services.
- Creating and maintaining in the school library a teaching
and learning environment that is inviting, safe, flexible, and
conducive to student learning; resource-based instructional
practices; and collaboration with teaching staff. Arranging for
flexible scheduling of the library to provide student access to staff
and resources as needed.
- Encouraging the use of instructional technology to engage
students and to improve learning, providing continual access to
digital information resources for the entire learning community.
- Developing policies and practices concerning such issues as
materials selection, circulation, reconsideration of materials,
copyright, privacy, and acceptable use. Remaining current in
professional practices and developments, information technologies,
and educational research applicable to school library programs.
- Promoting the library and maintaining frequent and timely
communication to stakeholders through the school and library website,
parent newsletter, e-mail, video/audio streaming, on-demand
video/podcasts, and other formats.
- Actively participating in the curriculum development
process to ensure that the school curriculum includes the full range
of literacy skills (information, media, visual, digital, and
technological literacy) necessary to meet content standards and to
develop lifelong learners.
- Understanding copyright, fair use, licensing of
intellectual property, and ethical use of information, and assisting
users with their understanding and observance of the same
Ensuring that school library program goals and objectives
are aligned with school's long-range strategic plans.
- Obtaining and overseeing outside grants and memberships.
- Hiring, supervising, training and evaluating library staff.
- Preparing and administering the school library program
budget to support specific program goals.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- A master's degree from a program accredited by the American
Library Association
- At least two years' experience working in a school library
environment (secondary school experience preferred)
- Familiarity and experience with emerging instructional,
information, and research technologies
- State certification as a school librarian preferred
- Teacher preparation program and/or educational degree preferred
- Familiarity and experience with Judaica libraries and
Judaic Studies research materials preferred
